Reassessing Mannon's Worldbuilding
Good Morning Everyone,
I've been in a hot debate with myself on some worldbuilding issues that I'll discuss in this post.
Firstly, my timeline for the world shouldn't be the global timeline. What I have created for events really only affects a single continent, maybe 2, so I need to reassess how I want to create historical components that affect everything on a global scale. Societies have formed in really different ways across the world, but something like the calendar maybe traveled across the world due to its convenience.
Time zones are also something I haven't given enough consideration, especially with the world being roughly twice the size of earth. It also goes to show how poorly scaled my maps are, so I need to really reshape my spatial understanding and placement for everything on the global scale. Maybe that means I add a 5th continent on the far western segment of the world? who knows. I think that having more towards the western segment of the world would be beneficial, as it means I could do more archipelagos, for all of the diverse biomes I want to be within the world.
The downside to all of this is that it takes a lot of reframing my outlook on the world's design, which is tougher than I want to admit to myself. I've had this 4 continent vision for the world for the last couple years after making a rough world map just for the fun of it and I felt pretty settled at that point.Taking a look at my most developed continent, Depocryss; it has a very square structure but it's distances vertically and horizontally are strangely askew for how ecosystems work within the real world. While I understand I can kinda structure it however due to fantasy, I do want to recognize the lack of cohesion in certain places and may need to adjust the environments to better suit the climates in mind.
For reference: Depocryss's landmass is roughly 3300 miles north to south and east to west. There's gaps, but the squared off map space including ocean comes out to be like 17 million square miles.
With all of that said. I think that this gives me more opportunity to be creative in Mannon's possibilities going forwards, but that possibility can lead to some writers block that I don't enjoy the likelihood of encountering down the line. First thing I'll be looking into is redoing the forests of the Verdanis region. I think much like how Iceland and Greenland are named backwards, I will similarly reflect it by keeping the name but give that area a much more frigid environment, at least in the northern sections.
As for the other components of non map making and such, those will be handled over time. Thanks for taking the time to read this, I really enjoy being able to give my thoughts to an audience that watches the process of the world change. I'd love to hear feedback or thoughts on these reflections or advice if there's any to offer.
Best wishes,
Oni
